Clothing
For any trip, you need to start with your outfits for the trip. I start always at the base of the outfit (underwear, bra, socks), sleepwear, then move to tops, and finally bottoms. I also like to bring as many options as I can, but with the least amount of clothing. One super helpful tip: try on all of the outfit combinations and take pictures to remember what goes together!
Tops, Bottoms & Dresses
I love options, but I also have limited space. My best advice is to have interchangeable options. For example, if I’m on a week long trip, I will bring 2 skirts and a pair of jeans. With those, I had a handful of tops that can go along. Every top will go with my jeans, and most of the shirts could go with the skirts, etc,. I also only have one sweater that goes with every option.
From there, I add any dresser items. Like a nicer dress, pants or shirt. This takes away some space because it requires an additional pair of shoes. It also means that outfit can’t be interchanged.
An optional set of items, that doesn’t always make the cut, workout clothes. I decide ahead of time if I will have time to workout, and how many times. I only pack that amount of workout items. So it’s a tee-shirt, sports bra, leggings, plus extra socks.
Outerwear
As I get closer to the trip, I check the weather to see what additional outfits are needed. For warmer months, I always have a swimsuit, more shorts and dresses. For colder months, a jacket, maybe a hat, gloves, and a scarf. I also like to bring along a raincoat and an umbrella I can throw in my purse.
Shoes
Finally, the last options are shoes. I always have a comfortable walking shoe that goes with every outfit, and even can be used for exercising. If I need a dresser option, I bring those along. Depending on the time of year, I pack sandals or a warmer shoe, like a boot.
Toiletries
This section is my downfall when packing. I use a lot of bathroom products and have tried to narrow it down as much as I can. I like to be over prepared in the event that a hotel may not have all that I need. For things like body wash, shampoo, conditioner, face wash and body lotion, I like to use reusable containers. I have a 4-pack from Amazon: Mrsdry Travel Bottles for Toiletries.
